Chick-dil-A

For those of you familiar with the chicken-centric fast food restaurant chain, Chick-fil-A, you’ll have deciphered the meaning of my blog title. Yes, there has been a delay (“dil-A”). “The best-laid plans of chicks and men” was my other blog title in the running.

I made arrangements to visit the farm at LICC (Librarian International Christian College) up in Ganta, Nimba County, to meet with Nathan Glenn who formerly worked with AgriCorps. They’ve recently gotten into poultry farming and we were hoping to do a little knowledge and supplier sharing. I borrowed Sam’s Land Cruiser, since the workers needed to haul wood with baby Foton, and took Bendu with me to pick up Tumamee in Gbarnga. As I approached him, he was talking intently on the phone. The BRAC farm manager had called him to say they were having “technical difficulties” at the hatchery and we would not receive any chicks tomorrow. I was ready to scream! I talked with the man and explained our extreme dissatisfaction and disappointment that they would take our money a week ago and then tell us the afternoon before delivery that they have issues. My aggravation was only compounded by the fact that I paid a lot of money to change my flights so I could spend nearly a week extra making sure the chicks arrived in good condition and that all was functioning smoothly with our feed, facilities, and staff. It really felt like the rug was pulled out from under me…disappointed and defeated barely describe the feeling. I should have known things were going too smoothly with BRAC for a typical transaction in Liberia.

  2. Jon, how incredibly frustrating. You’ve gone well beyond the extra mile to ensure the poultry farm would be up and running on this trip. So sorry. Deep breath. Don’t lose heart.

  3. jon, just when you want to shake your fist at the skies and ask God why don’t you do something?, He will reply, I did, I created you! That is a song i heard on K Love. It is exactly what speaks volumes for what you are going through. Thank you for keeping cool and not loosing your head, I would have lost it long before this latest finding. We are so pleased during all this you still maintain your wonderful sense of humor. Not all the praises or all the money in the world could repay you for all you have accomplished. Our prayers for your safe return home soon. THANK YOU! Donna
